D&D Necromancy and Lich Puzzle: The Death Trap

  • Type: Logic Puzzle
  • Location: Nercomancer’s Lair
  • Difficulty: Medium

The Puzzle:

Deep within a Lich’s lair players find two mummified hands with ten fingers reaching for the sky. Eight fingers bear magical rings radiating strong necromantic power. The rings have different colors.

Players can only move one ring from one finger to another at a time. It’s impossible to wear the ring and if left unattended it flies back to the finger it came off. It is possible to place the ring on another finger on the mummified hands, but only if there finger had no rings on it or the top ring is the same color as the one players wish to place on top of it. And in any case, you can never have more than 4 rings on any finger.

Puzzle solution:

To solve this necromantic puzzle players must reorganize the rings so that four rings of the same color are on the same finger. Once, all rings are placed correctly, one ring will start to glow. A PC who dawns this ring (which now has become possible) will gain control over a mummified hands. This necromantic spell functions like control undead but only for the hands. The hands cannot see, but they can feel.

Puzzle clues:

There are no clues to this D&D puzzle. The rules can be discovered through trial and error. You can have players make an intelligence check if they get stuck.

This video shows the same puzzle concept except that in place of ten fingers, it uses ten vials and in place of rings it uses liquids.
